When the Impossible Becomes Possible
How many times have you stared at a challenge and thought, “I could never do that”? The mountain looks too steep, the book too long, the project too complex, the dream too distant. We all have those moments that cause us to stop before we start.!
André Gide (1869–1951) wrote: “There are many things that seem impossible only so long as one does not attempt them.”
Gide’s words remind us that the impossible is often nothing more than untested ground. What feels unattainable usually dissolves the moment we take the first imperfect step. Effort has a way of reshaping reality: the act of trying shifts what is possible.
History and personal memory alike are full of stories of people who surprised even themselves. The West Coast Trail was once thought impassable, yet hikers walk it every summer. The blank page has silenced countless writers—until they dared to put down a single sentence. Even the act of forgiveness, which can feel beyond our strength, becomes possible once we choose to begin.
The truth is that impossibility is rarely a wall. More often, it is a fog that clears when we move forward.
Something to reflect on:
What in your life have you labeled “impossible”? What would happen if you took one small step toward it today?
